This year’s race will take place on Thursday, July 4th. The race begins at 2:02 p.m. when thousands of the participating ducks are launched into the World’s Fair Pond. Fire hoses help propel the participants to the finish line, where the top three participants are eligible for prizes. The Grand Prize for winning Knoxville Duck Race is $10,000; 1st Prize is $5,000; and 2nd Prize is a $2,500 gas card to Pilot.
To register for Knoxville’s Annual Duck Race, you can “adopt” you duck online for $5 a piece. Or, you can visit “adoption” locations around town at the Pinnacle in Turkey Creek, West Town Mall, ORNL Federal Credit Union Branches, and participating Taco Bell and Food City locations. Also, can adopt ducks at Pilot Food Marts, and register the ducks online.
In order to register, you must be at least 18 years old, but can register as many ducks as you would like. Participants are not required to attend the race, as winners will be announced on WBIR, WIVK, and in the Knoxville News Sentinel. Winners will also receive a phone call if they win.
In the past, anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 rubber ducks have competed in the competition, helping raise roughly $100,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs. The Boy’s & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley is a non-profit organization that helps provide education and character development for boys and girls in East Tennessee. They help boys and girls from ages 5 to 17 reach their full potential through a wide range of programs, including mentoring, education and career development, health and life skills, among other things.
This year’s Duck Race is sponsored by Human, ORNL Federal Credit Union, WBIR, Winegardner Properties, EdFinancial, 107.7. FM WIVK, News Talk Radio 98.7, Sports Animal, Comcast, the Knoxville News Sentinel, and Pilot.
