Want to hit the water somewhere new? Go kayaking in West Knoxville! Kayaking is the perfect exercise and recreation opportunity here, with over 50 miles of river running through the city and acres of lakes with calm waters within a short drive.
If you’re new in town, here’s a guide to some of the best spots in West Knoxville to hit the water.
Kayaking on Mead’s Quarry Lake is one of the most popular activities at Ijams. To better appreciate the beauty of this old marble quarry, you can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards from River Sports Outfitters. The quarry lake is deep and steep, with numerous drop-offs. Please exercise caution at Meads.
The Cove at Concord gives you access to Fort Loudoun Lake. In addition to kayaking, this location also features a volleyball court and a playground. A paved greenway links 1.8 miles of the beachfront walkway, and a trailhead provides access to 2.5 miles of multi-use trails.
Don’t miss the Clinch River if you enjoy the peaceful isolation of kayaking in the fog. The river is also a great place to see wildlife, and you might even spot a river otter! There are a few places to explore (by water) along the way. When you do, you’ll see some incredible rock formations.
With its location along the banks of the Holston River, Holston River Park provides a plethora of outdoor recreational activities, including kayaking. You can paddle upstream or downstream from the park, with lots of little inlets to explore in either direction.
Paddlers who travel downstream will join the Tennessee River and bend towards downtown for a fantastic riverfront trip.
Fort Dickerson Quarry is a beautiful spot where you can leisurely kayak. That said, the water access is a little tricky to find. However, if you’re the type who doesn’t like crowds, then you will love this spot. It’s an excellent place for adults to swim, but not for kids due to the depth and drop-offs in the water.
The quarry is gorgeous, and we recommend that you go there at least once to see for yourself.
West Knoxville is a great place to kayak, with several options for those who want to enjoy the area’s natural beauty. Whether you go on your own or with a group, it’s an experience worth enjoying. And who knows, maybe you’ll even find an adventure along the way.
