Ijams Nature Center is one of the top natural attractions around Knoxville. One of the reasons people go there is for the Ijams Nature Center trails. It features the River Boardwalk, Historic Mead’s Quarry, Jo’s Grove, and more. The 315-acre protected land is three miles from Downtown Knoxville. It provides recreational activities for families. Beyond hiking, you can enjoy swimming, paddling, and biking.

Hayworth Hollow, Imerys, and Gravel Road offer short and easy trails for hiking and biking. Hikers and bikers can pass through all three trails, which are 1.35 miles long. Hikers can complete these trails in under an hour. The Universal and Serendipity trails have paved paths and nearby restrooms and parking. Part of Ijams is the Will Skelton Greenway, which has a fantastic view of the Tennessee River. The River Boardwalk is a great spot to view the river as well.
Burnette Ridge, Flow, and Hickory are some moderate trails for skilled hikers and bikers. The North Cove, Ross Marble Quarry Loop, Discover Trails, Tall Creek, and Tower trails are pedestrian-only. These trails range from 0.2 – 1.4 miles, some near the river and pond.
The Tharp Trace and Turnbuckle trails are challenging and part of the Urban Wilderness South Loop Trail System. Tharp Trace is a mile long and near Mead’s Quarry Lake. Drop by the Ijams Beer Garden for refreshments when you go here. Tharp Trace is a pedestrian-only trail, while Turnbuckle is excellent for biking and walking.
You don’t need to bring your own gear to enjoy Ijams Nature Center. The Ijams Visitor Center features shops like River Sports Outfitters for bike rentals and Ijams River Landing for boat rentals.
Navitat, near Universal and Tower trails, offers a canopy adventure with distinct views of the forest. Also, Ijams Crag offers rock climbing for different skill levels. Apart from this, Jo’s Grove is a nature playscape ideal for children.
